The Rhode Island rules in full, with citations

The seal statute is R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-8-14, "Certificates of registration — Enrollment cards — Seals." § 5-8-11 (qualifications for registration) and § 5-8-12 are frequently cited in its place and govern nothing about the stamp. The engineering rule was amended effective 03/07/2024. The regulation is 420-RICR-00-00-1, filed as an amendment effective May 1, 2023. The Board sits within the Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation and is administered through the Division of Design Professionals.

Landscape Architect seal

Board:
Rhode Island Board of Examiners of Landscape Architects
Diameter:
No diameter is prescribed. § 1.4(R) defines the seal as one "of a design and size approved by the Board," leaving both to the Board rather than fixing a dimension, and R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-51-11 states none.
Legend:
“Registered Landscape Architect”
  • "'Seal' means an embossed circular seal or rubber stamp of a design and size approved by the Board. It shall contain the name of the landscape architect, the registration number, the word 'Registered' above the State's emblem, and the words 'Landscape Architect' below the registration number." (420-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.4(R))
  • "For the purpose of signing drawings, plans, specifications, reports and other contract documents, each registered landscape architect shall have an individual seal or stamp as described in definitions." (420-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.9(A))
  • "The seal/stamp shall be applied to the document and signed and dated by the registered landscape architect. The stamp or seal may be electronic. The stamp shall bear an original or an electronic signature." (420-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.9(B))
  • "No landscape designs, specifications or other landscape documents submitted to a federal, state or municipal agency for permit or authorization shall be submitted without the seal or stamp of the R.I. registered landscape architect in responsible charge of the work." (420-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.9(C))
  • For the purpose of signing all final drawings, plans, specifications, reports and other contract documents, each licensed landscape architect shall obtain an individual seal and a rubber stamp (a facsimile of the seal) to be used on documents prepared by him or her or under his or her supervision; a firm of more than one licensed landscape architect may use a single seal identifying a partner, officer, director, member or manager as personally responsible for the professional services provided. (R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-51-11(a)(1), (2))
  • "The board shall furnish a copy of the authorized seal from which the applicant can have a seal and stamp made." (R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-51-11(a)(3))

  • "All final drawings, specifications, plans, reports, or other papers or documents involving the practice of landscape architecture ... for use in this state shall be dated, and shall bear the signature and seal of the landscape architect or landscape architects who prepared or personally supervised their preparation." (R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-51-13(b)(3))
  • The landscape architect in responsible charge is required to stamp all drawings, reports, documents, specifications or other submissions which are required to be so signed or identified, and is professionally accountable for their accuracy and correctness. (420-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.12(D)(4))

FAQ

Rhode Island Landscape Architect Seal FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Rhode Island digital landscape architect stamps and seals.

How do I obtain a digital Rhode Island landscape architect seal or stamp?

Once you are licensed in Rhode Island, you can generate your seal here and download it immediately. Fill in the form and position your signature if you want one. The layout follows 420-RICR-00-00-1 §§ 1.4(R), 1.9; R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 5-51-11, 5-51-13(b)(3), which is the provision the Rhode Island Board of Examiners of Landscape Architects will measure the seal against.

What are the requirements for the Rhode Island landscape architect stamp or seal?

Rhode Island’s landscape architect seal rule is 420-RICR-00-00-1 §§ 1.4(R), 1.9; R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 5-51-11, 5-51-13(b)(3), administered by the Rhode Island Board of Examiners of Landscape Architects, a different body from the engineering board. The seal must carry “Registered Landscape Architect”, and no diameter is prescribed. § 1.4(R) defines the seal as one "of a design and size approved by the Board," leaving both to the Board rather than fixing a dimension, and R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-51-11 states none.

A further 9 requirements, each tied to the subsection that imposes it, are itemised in the Rhode Island requirements section on this page.

What size does a Rhode Island landscape architect seal have to be?

420-RICR-00-00-1 §§ 1.4(R), 1.9; R.I. Gen. Laws §§ 5-51-11, 5-51-13(b)(3) governs the Rhode Island landscape architect’s seal but does not prescribe a diameter. Sizes quoted for Rhode Island elsewhere generally come from stamp suppliers’ catalogues rather than from the rule. What the rule does require is that your name and license number stay clearly legible.

Does your Rhode Island seal carry the State's emblem?

§ 1.4(R) does not merely require words — it places the word "Registered" above the State's emblem and the words "Landscape Architect" below the registration number, so the emblem is part of the prescribed design. (420-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.4(R))

Who decides the size?

The Board does. § 1.4(R) approves both design and size, and § 5-51-11(a)(3) has the Board furnish a copy of the authorized seal from which the applicant has a seal and stamp made — so the design comes from the Board rather than from a dimension in the rule. (420-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.4(R); R.I. Gen. Laws § 5-51-11(a)(3))

Is an electronic seal alone enough?

The stamp or seal may be electronic, but § 1.9(B) still requires the document to be signed and dated and the stamp to bear an original or an electronic signature. (420-RICR-00-00-1 § 1.9(B))
