The Michigan rules in full, with citations

The rule fixes the wording and the layout by reference to Figure 32 but says nothing about diameter. MCL 339.2210(1) still speaks of a seal "approved by the department and the board", but the Board of Landscape Architects was abolished and its powers transferred to the department by Executive Reorganization Order No. 2007-17, compiled at MCL 445.2023; licensing is now administered by LARA's Bureau of Professional Licensing. R 339.19041 was amended by the rule set filed with the Secretary of State on April 26, 2021, which replaced the former "registered landscape architect" design with the "licensed landscape architect" design. A later rule set (2022-023) rescinded R 339.19004 to R 339.19018 and added R 339.19011 and others, but left R 339.19041 untouched.

  • "Each landscape architect shall have a seal, approved by the department and the board, which shall contain the name of the landscape architect, the number of his or her license and the legend 'landscape architect, state of Michigan' and other words or figures as the department considers necessary. Plans, specifications, and reports prepared by the landscape architect or under his or her supervision shall be stamped with his or her seal when filed with a public authority." (MCL 339.2210(1))
  • "Pursuant to section 2210(1) of the code, MCL 339.2210, each licensee shall have a seal that states the name of the licensee, his or her landscape architect license number, and bear the words 'licensed landscape architect' and 'state of Michigan.'" (Mich. Admin. Code R. 339.19041(1))
  • "The design of the seal to be used by each licensee is as follows:" — the figure reproduced in the rule is a circular seal with a rope border, reading STATE OF MICHIGAN across the top of the outer ring and LICENSED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT across the bottom, with a star at each side, and carrying the licensee's name, the words LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT and "License No." plus the number in the centre. • "The licensee shall obtain the seal when he or she is licensed and shall submit an imprint of the seal to the department within 30 days of licensure. • "A landscape architect who indorses a document with his or her seal while his or her license is not in full force and effect, or who indorses a document which the landscape architect did not actually prepare or supervise the preparation, is subject to the penalties prescribed in article 6." (MCL 339.2210(2))
  • No electronic or digital seal provision exists. Part 5 of the Landscape Architects – General Rules consists of the single rule R 339.19041, which contains no reference to electronic or digital seals or signatures, and Article 22 of the Occupational Code, MCL 339.2201 to 339.2211, contains none either. (Mich. Admin. Code R. 339.19041; MCL 339.2201 to 339.2211)

FAQ

Michigan Landscape Architect Seal FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Michigan digital landscape architect stamps and seals.

How do I obtain a digital Michigan landscape architect seal or stamp?

Once you are licensed in Michigan, you can generate your seal here and download it immediately. Fill in the form and position your signature if you want one. The layout follows MCL 339.2210; Mich. Admin. Code R. 339.19041, which is the provision the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Professional Licensing will measure the seal against.

What are the requirements for the Michigan landscape architect stamp or seal?

Michigan’s landscape architect seal rule is MCL 339.2210; Mich. Admin. Code R. 339.19041, administered by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Professional Licensing, a different body from the engineering board. The seal must carry “licensed landscape architect, state of Michigan”, and no diameter is prescribed. MCL 339.2210(1) states no dimension, and R 339.19041(2) supplies only a picture of the seal design with no measurement, caption or scale.

A further 8 requirements, each tied to the subsection that imposes it, are itemised in the Michigan requirements section on this page.

What size does a Michigan landscape architect seal have to be?

MCL 339.2210; Mich. Admin. Code R. 339.19041 governs the Michigan landscape architect’s seal but does not prescribe a diameter. Sizes quoted for Michigan elsewhere generally come from stamp suppliers’ catalogues rather than from the rule. What the rule does require is that your name and license number stay clearly legible.

Does the seal say "landscape architect" or "licensed landscape architect"?

The statute and the rule do not read the same way. MCL 339.2210(1) prescribes the legend "landscape architect, state of Michigan", while R 339.19041(1), as amended effective 4/26/2021, requires the words "licensed landscape architect" and "state of Michigan", and the design figure in R 339.19041(2) reads LICENSED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT. The statute permits "other words or figures as the department considers necessary", which is the authority under which the department's figure adds "licensed". (MCL 339.2210(1); Mich. Admin. Code R. 339.19041(1), (2))

Do you have to send an imprint to the state?

Yes, and on a deadline. R 339.19041(3) requires the licensee to obtain the seal on licensure and submit an imprint to the department within 30 days of licensure, and to submit a new imprint within 30 days if a new seal is obtained later. (Mich. Admin. Code R. 339.19041(3))
