The Montana rules in full, with citations

ARM 24.183.1001, sometimes cited for Montana seals, is "Form of Corner Records — Information to Be Included" and does not concern seals. ARM 24.183.511 was rewritten effective December 24, 2016; pre-2016 text still circulating on third-party republishers refers to a "Licensed Professional Engineer" legend and to facsimiles, and that version is superseded. Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410 was adopted in 2009 (2009 MAR p. 413, eff. 4/17/09) and last amended effective 11/10/2017; its authority is Mont. Code Ann. § 37-65-204 and it implements § 37-66-308. Montana licenses architects and landscape architects through a single board.

Landscape Architect seal

Board:
Board of Architects and Landscape Architects
Diameter:
No diameter is prescribed. Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2) states no dimension, and Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410, the rule in which the Board sets out the seal's contents, likewise contains no size, shape or dimension.
Legend:
“Licensed Landscape Architect, State of Montana”
  • Each landscape architect must have a seal approved by the board that must contain the name of the landscape architect and the words "Licensed Landscape Architect, State of Montana" and other words or figures that the board considers necessary. (Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2))
  • All drawings and title pages of specifications prepared by a landscape architect or under the supervision of a landscape architect must be stamped with the landscape architect's seal. (Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2))
  • This section may not be construed to permit the seal of a landscape architect to serve as a substitute for the seal of a licensed architect, a licensed professional engineer, or a licensed professional land surveyor. (Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2))
  • Every licensed landscape architect must have a seal that contains the name of the landscape architect, the landscape architect's Montana license number, the signature of the licensed landscape architect, and the words "LICENSED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, STATE OF MONTANA." (Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410(1))
  • For the purpose of sealing printed drawings, specifications, and other appropriate documents, each landscape architect must obtain an embossing or rubber stamp and a reproduction facsimile of the seal to be used on documents prepared by or under the supervision of a licensed landscape architect. The seal or reproducible facsimile must be applied on all original drawings to produce legible reproduction on all copies or prints made from the drawings. (Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410(2))
  • A signature is an original manual signature of the landscape architect or a digital signature. A digital signature must either have an electronic authentication process attached or must be logically associated with an electronic document and unique to the person using it; capable of verification; under the sole control of the person using it; and linked to a document in such a manner that the digital signature is invalidated if any data in the document are changed. (Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410(3))
  • When the efforts of more than one licensed landscape architect combine to produce documents requiring a seal, only one licensed landscape architect is required to affix a seal to the document. (Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410(4))
  • Each holder of a license shall display it in the licensee's principal office, place of business, or place of employment. (Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(1))

FAQ

Montana Landscape Architect Seal FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Montana digital landscape architect stamps and seals.

How do I obtain a digital Montana landscape architect seal or stamp?

Once you are licensed in Montana, you can generate your seal here and download it immediately. Fill in the form and position your signature if you want one. The layout follows Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2); Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410, which is the provision the Board of Architects and Landscape Architects will measure the seal against.

What are the requirements for the Montana landscape architect stamp or seal?

Montana’s landscape architect seal rule is Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2); Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410, administered by the Board of Architects and Landscape Architects, a different body from the engineering board. The seal must carry “Licensed Landscape Architect, State of Montana”, and no diameter is prescribed. Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2) states no dimension, and Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410, the rule in which the Board sets out the seal's contents, likewise contains no size, shape or dimension.

A further 8 requirements, each tied to the subsection that imposes it, are itemised in the Montana requirements section on this page.

What size does a Montana landscape architect seal have to be?

Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2); Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410 governs the Montana landscape architect’s seal but does not prescribe a diameter. Sizes quoted for Montana elsewhere generally come from stamp suppliers’ catalogues rather than from the rule. What the rule does require is that your name and license number stay clearly legible.

Does your seal include the signature as one of its own elements?

Montana is one of the states that puts the signature inside the seal: Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410(1) lists "the signature of the licensed landscape architect" as a required element of the seal itself, not merely as something written across it. (Mont. Admin. R. 24.114.1410(1))

Are you sealing work that actually requires an architect's, engineer's or surveyor's seal?

Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2) says the landscape architect's seal may not serve as a substitute for the seal of a licensed architect, professional engineer, or professional land surveyor. (Mont. Code Ann. § 37-66-308(2))
