The Tennessee rules in full, with citations

The 1⅝-to-1⅞-inch range quoted for Tennessee has no source in the rules: the words "inch", "diameter" and "size" appear nowhere in chapters 0120-01 or 0120-02. The two-inch figure belongs to the land surveyor rule. The Secretary of State still publishes the rule-maker as the State Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners (Title 0120), while the board's own page uses the name State Board of Examiners for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors. Tennessee has no geologist board. The Geologist Licensure Act of 2007 is administered by the Commissioner of the Department of Commerce and Insurance through the Professional Geologists Licensing Program, and the rules speak throughout of "the commissioner" rather than a board (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.02(2), -.03(1)). The chapter is styled "0780-5-7" in the Secretary of State's own publication, though some databases render it "0780-05-07". Rule 0780-5-7-.09(1)(b) makes a violation of the seal rule itself subject to a civil penalty of up to $1,000 per violation.

Geologist seal

Board:
Tennessee Professional Geologists Licensing Program, Department of Commerce and Insurance, Division of Regulatory Boards
Diameter:
No diameter is prescribed. Rule 0780-5-7-.08(1) fixes the design by reproducing an image of the seal rather than by giving a dimension, and no other rule in chapter 0780-5-7 states a size.
Legend:
“Tennessee, Licensed Professional Geologist”
  • The design of a licensee's seal required by T.C.A. §62-36-112 shall be as follows: the rule then reproduces the required design, a circular seal reading "Tennessee" across the top with three stars, the licensee's name on a banner, an outline of the state with a crossed hammer and pick, the license number, and "Licensed Professional Geologist" around the lower border. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(1))
  • Subject to the requirements of this rule, rubber-stamp, embossed, transparent self-adhesive or electronically-generated seals may be used by the licensee; however, such stamps or seals shall not include the licensee's signature or date of signature. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(2))
  • Subject to the requirements of this rule, the licensee may affix his or her electronically-generated signature and date of signature to plans, plats, drawings, reports, or other geologic papers or documents as long as the licensee utilizes a secure method of affixation, does not authorize any other person to affix his or her signature and date, and does not allow any other person to have access to his or her signature. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(3))
  • The licensee shall stamp with his or her seal all original sheets of any bound or unbound plans, plats, drawings, reports, or other geologic papers or documents involving geologic work developed by the licensee or under the licensee's responsible charge of work. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(4))
  • The licensee shall superimpose his or her signature (not a rubber stamp) and date of signature across the face and beyond the circumference of the seal on the documents listed above. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(5))
  • Any portions of documents involving geologic work prepared in part by a licensee functioning as a consultant on a project shall have his or her signature placed on the pages of the document for which the licensee is responsible. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(6))
  • No licensee shall affix his or her seal or signature to plans, plats, drawings, reports, or other geologic papers or documents developed by others not under the licensee's responsible charge of work as defined by T.C.A. §62-36-103. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(7))
  • Any changes made to the final plans, plats, drawings, reports or other geologic papers or documents after final revision and sealing by the licensee are prohibited by any person other than the licensee. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(8)(b))

FAQ

Tennessee Geologist Seal FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Tennessee digital geologist stamps and seals.

How do I obtain a digital Tennessee professional geologist seal or stamp?

Once you are licensed in Tennessee, you can generate your seal here and download it immediately. Fill in the form and position your signature if you want one. The layout follows Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08, which is the provision the Tennessee Professional Geologists Licensing Program, Department of Commerce and Insurance, Division of Regulatory Boards will measure the seal against.

What are the requirements for the Tennessee geologist stamp or seal?

Tennessee’s geologist seal rule is Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08, administered by the Tennessee Professional Geologists Licensing Program, Department of Commerce and Insurance, Division of Regulatory Boards, a different body from the engineering board. The seal must carry “Tennessee, Licensed Professional Geologist”, and no diameter is prescribed. Rule 0780-5-7-.08(1) fixes the design by reproducing an image of the seal rather than by giving a dimension, and no other rule in chapter 0780-5-7 states a size.

A further 8 requirements, each tied to the subsection that imposes it, are itemised in the Tennessee requirements section on this page.

What size does a Tennessee geologist seal have to be?

Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08 governs the Tennessee professional geologist’s seal but does not prescribe a diameter. Sizes quoted for Tennessee elsewhere generally come from stamp suppliers’ catalogues rather than from the rule. What the rule does require is that your name and license number stay clearly legible.

Is your signature or date built into the stamp?

Rule 0780-5-7-.08(2) expressly forbids it — rubber-stamp, embossed, self-adhesive and electronically-generated seals "shall not include the licensee's signature or date of signature". (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(2))

Does the signature cross the seal?

Rule 0780-5-7-.08(5) requires the signature and date to be superimposed across the face and beyond the circumference of the seal, and states that the signature may not be a rubber stamp. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(5))

Did you stamp every sheet?

Rule 0780-5-7-.08(4) requires the seal on all original sheets of any bound or unbound plans, plats, drawings, reports or other geologic papers, not only on a cover sheet. (Tenn. Comp. R. & Regs. 0780-5-7-.08(4))
