Wyoming PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Wyoming splits the three professions across two boards with two unrelated seal rules. Engineers and land surveyors seal under Chapter 5, Section 1 of the Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors' rules, which fixes the geometry exactly — two concentric circles, the outer 1¾ inches in diameter and the inner 1¼ inches — with "Professional Engineer", "Professional Land Surveyor" or "Professional Engineer & Land Surveyor" across the top of the annular space and the single word "Wyoming" across the bottom. Architects seal under Chapter 9 of the Board of Architects and Landscape Architects' rules, where the legend is "LICENSED ARCHITECT-STATE OF WYOMING" and the diameter is a range, no less than 1½ inches and no more than 2 inches.
Chapter 5 of the engineering board's rules was last amended 3 September 2021, and its Section 2, headed "Sizes", governs sheet dimensions rather than seal diameter — the seal is dimensioned in Section 1(a). Every version of that chapter in force between 1 July 2013 and 24 March 2020 prescribed no dimensions at all; the 24 March 2020 amendment restored the 1¾-inch and 1¼-inch figures the rules had carried before the 2013 rewrite. The architects board renumbered Chapter 9 on 17 December 2025: the seal design is now Section 2, where earlier guidance cites Section 1, and Section 1 is now a bare authority provision. Seals authorized before 1 July 2013 may still be used, and the architects board still accepts its 2011 and 2001 seal designs for anyone licensed before 17 December 2025 and its 1992 design for anyone licensed before 27 April 2001. Landscape architects are licensed by the architects board and seal under the same Chapter 9, reading "LICENSED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT-STATE OF WYOMING" in place of the architect legend.

- Expiration date
- The inner circle carries the word "Date" — that is the field for the date of signing, which subsection (c) requires to be superimposed over the seal. It is not a license expiration date.(Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(a), (c))
- Signature date
- "Whenever the professional seal is applied, the licensee's signature and the date shall also be included", and the signature and date of signing must be superimposed over the seal.(Wyo. Stat. § 33-29-601(b), (c); Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(c))
- City on seal
- The seal holds only the legend, the inscription "Wyoming", the licensee's name, the license number and the word "Date".(Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(a))
- The upper portion of the annular space between the two circles bears "Professional Engineer", or "Professional Engineer & Land Surveyor" for a licensee who holds both licenses, and the bottom of that annular space bears the inscription "Wyoming".(Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(a))
- The inner circle contains the licensee's name, the license number and the word "Date", and the design illustrated in the rule places the Wyoming bucking horse and rider inside it. The license number is centered where the illustration prints "NUMBER", and the digits should be no larger than the word "NAME".(Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(a))
- To be valid, any seal must be legible in its entirety, and the signature of the licensee and the date of signing must be superimposed over the seal.(Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(c))
- When a document runs to more than one sheet, the title page or the first page is sealed, signed and dated by the licensee who supervised the work and is responsible for it.(Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(c))
- The professional seal, the signature and the date shall be placed on all final designs, specifications, maps, land surveys, reports, plats, drawings and plans filed or recorded under W.S. 33-29-801.(Wyo. Stat. § 33-29-601(c))
- Electronically generated seals are acceptable if they comply with the design in subsection (a) and are accompanied by the licensee's signature and date, and under the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act an electronic image of the seal, signature and date may be used in place of originals on electronic submittals to government agencies or between private entities.(Wyo. - A digital signature must be unique to the licensee using it, capable of verification, under the sole responsibility and control of the licensee affixing it, and linked to the document so that it is invalidated if any data in the document is changed.(Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(e))
- A newly licensed applicant must purchase a seal and file with the Board, on the Board's form, an impression or stamp of it with an original signature superimposed over it.(Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(h))
Wyoming engineer seal questions
Does a Wyoming PE seal read "Wyoming" or "State of Wyoming"?▾
The engineer's and the surveyor's seal carries the single word "Wyoming" at the bottom of the annular space, not "State of Wyoming". "STATE OF WYOMING" belongs to the architect's seal, which is set by a different board under a different rule. (Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(a); Wyo. Code R. 012.0001.9 § 2(a))
Does the inner circle of a Wyoming PE seal have a required size?▾
The inner circle of the engineering seal is dimensioned, not decorative: a 1¾-inch outer circle takes a 1¼-inch inner circle. The Board reviews the impression every new licensee files and may disapprove a seal that does not meet the exact specifications, requiring a corrected one before any work is sealed. (Wyo. Can a Wyoming PE seal say "P.E."?▾
"P.E." is not a Wyoming legend. Section 1(a) allows exactly three phrases — "Professional Engineer", "Professional Land Surveyor" and "Professional Engineer & Land Surveyor" — and the placeholders in the rule's illustration are not part of the seal: the words and parentheses "(NUMBER)" and "(NAME)" should not appear on it. Does every sheet of a Wyoming PE drawing set need a seal?▾
An engineer or land surveyor seals the title page or the first page of a multi-sheet document, not every sheet. It is Wyoming's architects board that asks for the seal on each sheet of the original drawings. (Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(c); Wyo. Code R. 012.0001.9 § 3(b))
What date goes in the "Date" field on a Wyoming seal?▾
Nothing on a Wyoming seal is a license expiration date. The word "Date" inside the inner circle is where the date of signing goes, and both the signature and that date have to be superimposed over the seal rather than placed beside it. (Wyo. Code R. 037.0001.5 § 1(a), (c))
