Alabama PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Alabama's seal rule is Ala. Admin. Code r. 330-X-11-.02: circular, and from 1-5/8 to 2 inches in diameter. The rule does not state the wording — it delegates to "the design to be furnished each new licensee" — so the legend comes from Ala. Code § 34-11-7(c), which requires "licensed professional engineer". The Board's authorized design carries ALABAMA across the top and the licensee's name across the bottom, with LICENSED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER and the license number in the center. Architects answer to a different board under Ala. Admin. Code r. 100-X-5-.03, which fixes the seal at exactly two inches and does require "STATE OF ALABAMA".
Chapter 330-X-11 is still published under the Board's former name, Alabama State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Seals obtained before the rule was adopted that conform to prior Board rules remain acceptable.

- Each design sheet must be signed, sealed, and dated by the licensee who prepared it or under whose responsible charge it was prepared.(330-X-11-.03(3)(a))
- A computer generated seal or facsimile is acceptable only when the signature and the date the document was signed are on or adjacent to it. Any variation must be submitted to and approved by the Board.(330-X-11-.03(8))

Does an Alabama PE seal say "State of Alabama"?▾
The engineer's seal reads ALABAMA. "State of Alabama" is the architect's wording, not the engineer's. (330-X-11-.02(2); 100-X-5-.03)
Does Alabama allow a 1½-inch seal?▾
The floor is 1-5/8 inches, not 1½. A 1½-inch seal is undersized in Alabama. (330-X-11-.02(2))
Can an Alabama PE seal just say "Professional Engineer"?▾
"Professional Engineer" on its own is not the legend, and neither is "P.E." The statute requires "licensed professional engineer". (Ala. Code § 34-11-7(c))
When is a computer generated seal acceptable in Alabama?▾
A computer generated seal is acceptable only when the signature and the date of signing sit on or adjacent to it. (330-X-11-.03(8))
