Alaska PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Alaska prescribes the seal as a picture rather than a specification. 12 AAC 36.180 reproduces the authorized design for each profession and requires the registrant's seal to be that design "or a substantially similar electronic or digital representation" of it; no diameter appears anywhere in AS 08.48 or 12 AAC 36. The engineer's design reads "STATE OF ALASKA" across the top and "REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER" across the bottom, around a star, a "49 TH" device, a signature line, the registrant's name and number. The two-character branch identifier the board assigns must precede that number — No. ME-00000 for a mechanical engineer — and the number itself carries only numeric characters.
AS 08.48.221 now contemplates a seal for registered interior designers, but 12 AAC 36.180 as printed in the June 2026 edition still shows only the architect, landscape architect, land surveyor, structural engineer and professional engineer designs.

- The registrant inserts the date, electronically or manually, within the seal or within two inches of the seal, each time the registrant signs and seals a document.(12 AAC 36.185(d))
- The seal is validated either by an original handwritten signature over each seal, or by an electronic image of that signature permanently affixed directly over the seal together with a digital signature that is unique to the registrant, verifiable, under exclusive control, and invalidated if the document changes.(12 AAC 36.185(f))
- Every document required to be signed and sealed must also show the business name, physical address and telephone number, the project name or identification, the project address or location, and the entity's certificate of authorization number if applicable.(12 AAC 36.185(g))
Alaska engineer seal questions
Is there a required diameter for an Alaska seal?▾
There is no prescribed diameter. Any 1½-to-2-inch range quoted for Alaska is not in the rule; what the rule requires is a design substantially similar to the illustration. (12 AAC 36.180)
What license number goes on an Alaska engineer's seal?▾
The number printed on the seal is not the license number as issued. Strip the alpha characters, and put the board's two-character branch identifier in front of what remains. (12 AAC 36.180(b))
Where does the date go on an Alaska sealed document?▾
The date has a prescribed location: within the seal, or within two inches of the seal. The title block does not satisfy this. (12 AAC 36.185(d))
What must appear on an Alaska sealed document besides the seal?▾
A sealed document is incomplete without the firm's business name, physical address and telephone number, the project name and location, and the certificate of authorization number where one applies. (12 AAC 36.185(g))
