Arkansas PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Arkansas's seal rule is 17 CAR § 285-602. The seal runs from one and one-quarter inch (1 ¼ in.) to two inches (2 in.) in diameter and must have a milled edge conforming to the design the rule prints: STATE OF ARKANSAS across the top over the state outline, LICENSED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER in the center above the license number, and the licensee's name across the bottom. The legend is "licensed professional engineer", so a seal reading only "Professional Engineer" does not match the authorized design. Arkansas licenses "professional surveyors", not land surveyors, and their design puts STATE OF ARKANSAS in the center with the legend running around the border.
The Board's rules were recodified into the Code of Arkansas Rules of 2024, which is what renumbered the seal rule out of the Board's pre-2024 article numbering into 17 CAR § 285-602. The substance is unchanged from the text effective June 1, 2022. Seals previously acquired in compliance with then current rules need not be changed.

- The rule does not require a city on the seal.(17 CAR § 285-602(a)(1), (d)(1)(A))
- The seal bears the licensee's name, license number, and the legend "licensed professional engineer".(17 CAR § 285-602(a)(1))
- The engineer seal shall use the design printed in the rule: STATE OF ARKANSAS across the top with the state outline, LICENSED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER stacked in the center, the number below it, and the licensee's name across the bottom.(17 CAR § 285-602(d)(1)(A))
- A facsimile rubber stamp is authorized in lieu of a seal, and may have either a milled edge or two concentric circles corresponding with the respective edges of the milling.(17 CAR § 285-602(d)(2)(B)-(C))
- The name and number inscribed in the seal must correspond to the name and certificate number shown on the certificate of licensure.(17 CAR § 285-602(d)(2)(D))
- Each page of each final engineering document, the cover sheet of specifications and the signature page of written reports must be dated, signed, and stamped when issued.(17 CAR § 285-602(a)(2))
- Record or as-built drawings shall not be sealed unless specifically required by contract, and then must carry a caveat identifying the source and basis of the information and stating that the drawing cannot be guaranteed accurate.(17 CAR § 285-602(a)(4))
- Documents may be sealed electronically. A digitally signed document may be transmitted electronically if the signature is unique to and under the sole control of the person who applied it, capable of verification, and invalidated if any data on the document is altered.(17 CAR § 285-602(d)(5)(A))
- A document sealed but not signed that is transmitted electronically must carry: "This document was originally issued and sealed by (name of licensee), (license number) on (date). This copy is not a signed and sealed document."(17 CAR § 285-602(d)(5)(B)(ii))

How small can an Arkansas engineer's seal be, and does it need a milled edge?▾
The floor is 1 ¼ inches, lower than most states, and the rule requires a milled edge conforming to the printed design. A rubber stamp may substitute two concentric circles matching the edges of the milling. (17 CAR § 285-602(d)(2)(A)-(C))
Does an Arkansas seal have to say "State of Arkansas"?▾
"State of Arkansas" is required by the mandatory illustrated design, not by the element list in the rule's opening paragraph, which names only name, number and legend. (17 CAR § 285-602(d)(1)(A))
Can I put a shortened form of my name on an Arkansas seal?▾
The name and number on the seal must correspond to the certificate of licensure. An abbreviated or preferred form of the name is not authorized. (17 CAR § 285-602(d)(2)(D))
Should as-built drawings be sealed in Arkansas?▾
Record and as-built drawings are not to be sealed at all unless the contract specifically requires it, and then only with the prescribed caveat. (17 CAR § 285-602(a)(4))
