Colorado PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Colorado's seal rule is Board Rule 1.5(A) of 4 CCR 730-1, adopted under C.R.S. § 12-120-216. The approved design puts "COLORADO LICENSED" in the top arc and "PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER" in the bottom arc — "State of Colorado" appears nowhere on the seal. The rule fixes the geometry rather than a single diameter: the outer circle is nominally 1-5/8 inches (41 mm) and the inner circle nominally 15/16 inches (24 mm), with the license number centered in the inner area. The signature and the date of signature must appear through the seal, not beside it.
One board licenses architects, professional engineers and professional land surveyors in Colorado, and all three seals share the same two-circle geometry — only the bottom arc changes. Rule 1.5(A)(1) deems engineer and land surveyor seals obtained before July 1, 2005 acceptable; Rule 1.7(A)(1) does the same for architect seals obtained before September 1, 2015.

- The inner area carries your name over your license number. The license number takes the place occupied by the word "NUMBER" on the illustrated design, in figures the same size as the letters of that word.(Board Rule 1.5(A)(1))
- The seal may be crimp type, rubber stamp type, and/or computer generated.(Board Rule 1.5(A)(1))
- The manual or electronic signature of the licensee and the date of signature shall appear through the seal.(Board Rule 1.5(A)(3))

Does "State of Colorado" go on a Colorado PE seal?▾
"State of Colorado" does not belong on the seal. The board's approved design uses "COLORADO LICENSED" in the top arc and the profession in the bottom arc, and nothing else. (Board Rule 1.5(A)(1), 4 CCR 730-1, and the design incorporated in it)
Should the word "NUMBER" appear on a Colorado seal?▾
The word "NUMBER" is a placeholder on the illustrated design and should not appear on the finished seal — your license number goes in its place. (Board Rule 1.5(A)(1))
Do the signature and date have to go through a Colorado seal?▾
The signature and date must run through the seal. Placing them beside it does not satisfy the rule. (Board Rule 1.5(A)(3))
Can I seal only the cover page of a Colorado drawing set?▾
Sealing only the cover page(s) of a set of drawings is permitted, but then Signature Dynamic Technology shall be used, every page must carry a title-block notation that all seals are on the cover page(s), and all pages including the cover must be numbered. (Board Rule 1.5(A)(2)(a)(1))
