Arizona PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Arizona fixes the seal at 1 1/2 inches. A.A.C. R4-30-303 requires an ink seal "identical in style, size, and appearance" to the sample in Appendix A: "Registered Professional Engineer" together with the branch of engineering in the upper annular space, the inscription "Arizona U.S.A." at the bottom of that space, and the registrant's name, registration number and the words "date signed" in the inner circle. "State of Arizona" appears nowhere on an Arizona seal. Before using the seal at all the registrant files an imprint of it with the Board, and an engineer registered in more than one branch must secure a seal for each branch.
R4-30-304 is often cited as the Arizona seal rule; it governs where the seal goes on documents. What the seal must contain, and its size, are in R4-30-303 and Appendix A. Both were last amended by final rulemaking at 24 A.A.R. 1785, effective August 5, 2018.

- 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Appendix A allows 1 1/2" ± 1/16" on the outer circle and 1 1/8" ± 1/16" on the inner circle.

- No. R4-30-304(E) requires only an original or computer-generated seal matching the one on file with the Board, a signature that does not obscure the printed name or registration number, and the date the document was sealed. A former subsection did require an expiration notation beneath the seal, but it and its Appendix B were repealed in 2018 — sources still showing it are quoting the 2008-2018 text.(A.A.C. - Signature date
- A registrant shall sign, date, and seal a professional document, and every original document must include the date the document was sealed.(A.A.C. R4-30-304(D), (E)(3))
- City on seal
- The only place named on the seal is the inscription "Arizona U.S.A." at the bottom of the annular space.(A.A.C. R4-30-303(A)(2))
- The seal must be an ink seal identical in style, size, and appearance to the sample shown in Appendix A.(R4-30-303(A))

- Before using the seal for any purpose, the registrant files with the Board an imprint of the seal with an original signature superimposed over it, plus a seal affidavit. The Board disapproves any seal that does not meet the exact specifications.(R4-30-303(B))
- Engineers registered in more than one branch must secure and use a seal for each branch in which registration has been granted.(R4-30-303(B))
- An original document carries an original seal imprint or a computer-generated seal that matches the seal on file at the Board's office, an original signature that does not obscure the printed name or registration number, and the date the document was sealed.(R4-30-304(E))
- Methods of transferring a seal other than an original seal imprint or a computer-generated seal are not acceptable. An electronic signature complying with A.R.S. Titles 41 and 44 is acceptable for all professional documents.(R4-30-304(F), (G))

Does an Arizona seal say "State of Arizona"?▾
The wording is "Arizona U.S.A." and it sits at the bottom of the annular space. "State of Arizona" is not on the seal, and nothing is at the top but the profession phrase. (R4-30-303(A)(1)-(2))
Can an Arizona seal be larger than 1 1/2 inches?▾
1 1/2 inches is the size, not a minimum — Appendix A allows only 1/16 inch either way on the outer circle. The Board disapproves any seal that does not meet the exact specifications of R4-30-303(A), so a computer-generated seal has to be placed at 1 1/2 inches rather than scaled up or down to fit the sheet. Does "date signed" have to be printed on an Arizona seal?▾
The words "date signed" are part of the seal, inside the inner circle, and are separate from the date the document was sealed. (R4-30-303(A)(2); R4-30-304(E)(3))
When is a computer-generated seal valid in Arizona?▾
A computer-generated seal is valid only if it matches the seal already on file at the Board's office, filed with an original signature superimposed over the imprint. (R4-30-303(B); R4-30-304(E)(1))
