The New Mexico rules in full, with citations

The engineering and surveying board's legal name is the "state board of licensure for professional engineers and professional surveyors" (NMSA 1978 § 61-23-5(A); 16.39.1.8(A) NMAC); its own website styles it "New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers & Professional Surveyors". NMAC prints the engineer and surveyor legends in lower case — "professional engineer", "professional surveyor" — while capitalizing "New Mexico" in the same sentence; the rule prescribes the words and does not address letter case. Do not copy 16.39.1.8(B) NMAC, which describes an embossed 1¾-inch seal of two concentric circles reading "state of New Mexico": that is the board's own official seal, not a licensee's. Engineers and surveyors licensed before the current rules who have kept the license without lapse may retain a previously approved seal (16.39.3.12(D), 16.39.5.11(D) NMAC). Both seal sections were last amended 12/16/2022 and remain the current text; the statute behind them has since moved ahead of the rule, in that NMSA 1978 §§ 61-23-19(B) and 61-23-27.8(B) now let the board "approve alternative authentications to physical or electronic seals", wording that 16.39.3.3 NMAC still quotes in its older, shorter form. Laws 2023, ch. 190, § 31 (effective July 1, 2023) moved administration of the Interior Designers Act from the interior design board to the Regulation and Licensing Department; the rules were reissued as 16.42 NMAC Parts 1-7 effective July 18, 2023 with "Regulation and Licensing Department" as issuing agency, though RLD's web page is still headed "New Mexico Interior Design Board." The seal provision sits inside 16.42.1.12, a section captioned ADVERTISING, which is easy to miss.

Interior Designer seal

Board:
New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department (Interior Design Board)
Diameter:
Two inches. 16.42.1.12(C)(1) NMAC describes the official seal as "an embossed circular seal two inches in diameter consisting of two concentric circles; the annular space between the two circles shall contain the seal of the state of New Mexico." No other dimension appears in 16.42 NMAC or in the Interior Designers Act.
Legend:
“Licensed Interior Designer State of New Mexico”
  • "The department authorizes a seal or stamp for use by licensed interior designers. The seal shall attest that the documents were prepared and reviewed by the licensed interior designer (LID)." (16.42.1.12(C)(2) NMAC)
  • "The seal/stamp will bear the LID's name and license number and the legend 'Licensed Interior Designer State of New Mexico.'" (16.42.1.12(C)(3) NMAC)
  • "The official seal shall be as follows: an embossed circular seal two inches in diameter consisting of two concentric circles; the annular space between the two circles shall contain the seal of the state of New Mexico." (16.42.1.12(C)(1) NMAC)
  • "All plans, specifications and reports issued by a LID shall have the LID's signature placed across the seal/stamp." (16.42.1.12(C)(3) NMAC)
  • Sealing another's work: "When an LID signs, stamps or seals a document containing the work of others, the LID represents that the entire document has been prepared by them under their responsible control, unless they include a written statement adjacent to their signature, stamp or seal identifying the portion of the document that was prepared by them or prepared under their responsible control." (16.42.1.12(C)(2) NMAC)
  • Statutory disclaimer on the document itself: "Interior design documents prepared by a licensed interior designer shall contain a statement that the document is not an architectural or engineering study, drawing, specification or design and is not to be used as the basis for construction of any load-bearing framing, wall or structure construction." (NMSA 1978, § 61-24C-15(A))
  • The Interior Designers Act itself prescribes no seal design; it only permits the department to "adopt a common seal for use by licensed interior designers." The design therefore comes entirely from 16.42.1.12(C) NMAC. (NMSA 1978, § 61-24C-5(E))
  • The rules are silent on electronic sealing. 16.42 NMAC defines "electronic signature" only for license applications (16.42.3.7-3.8 NMAC) and contains no electronic-seal provision. (16.42.3.7, 16.42.3.8 NMAC; 16.42.1.12(C) NMAC)

FAQ

New Mexico Interior Designer Seal FAQs

Frequently asked questions about New Mexico digital interior designer stamps and seals.

How do I obtain a digital New Mexico interior designer seal or stamp?

Once you are licensed in New Mexico, you can generate your seal here and download it immediately. Fill in the form and position your signature if you want one. The layout follows 16.42.1.12(C) NMAC, which is the provision the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department (Interior Design Board) will measure the seal against.

What are the requirements for the New Mexico interior designer stamp or seal?

New Mexico’s interior designer stamp rule is 16.42.1.12(C) NMAC, administered by the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department (Interior Design Board), a different body from the engineering board. The seal must carry “Licensed Interior Designer State of New Mexico”, and two inches.

A further 8 requirements, each tied to the subsection that imposes it, are itemised in the New Mexico requirements section on this page.

What size does a New Mexico interior designer stamp have to be?

This is set by 16.42.1.12(C)(1) NMAC.

Does the New Mexico interior designer's seal have to contain the seal of the state of New Mexico?

Does your New Mexico seal carry the state seal? 16.42.1.12(C)(1) NMAC describes two concentric circles with "the seal of the state of New Mexico" in the annular space, while (C)(3) puts the name, license number and legend on the same seal. (16.42.1.12(C)(1), (3) NMAC)

Where does the signature go on a New Mexico interior design seal?

Is your signature across the seal rather than beside it? 16.42.1.12(C)(3) NMAC requires the signature "placed across the seal/stamp" on all plans, specifications and reports. (16.42.1.12(C)(3) NMAC)

Is the seal alone enough on a New Mexico interior design document?

Does every document carry the statutory disclaimer? Section 61-24C-15(A) NMSA 1978 requires each interior design document to state that it is not an architectural or engineering study, drawing, specification or design and is not to be used as the basis for load-bearing construction. That statement is separate from the seal. (NMSA 1978, § 61-24C-15(A))
