Texas PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Texas prescribes the artwork itself. 22 TAC § 137.31 requires the Board-authorized design — "STATE OF TEXAS" around the top of the outer band, "LICENSED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER" around the bottom, a star in the center, with your name and license number beneath it — at no larger than 2 inches in diameter. That figure is a ceiling rather than a floor, so a smaller computer-generated seal is acceptable provided the name and number stay clearly legible.
Texas is one of the few states where the board publishes the seal artwork itself and warns that a non-compliant seal is an enforcement matter. Note that the size rule is a ceiling, not a floor.

- Diameter
- No larger than 2 inches in diameter. The rule sets a ceiling, not a floor — a computer-generated seal may be smaller so long as the name and number stay clearly legible.

- Signature date
- Seal, original or electronic signature and date go on the final version before it leaves the engineer's control; the signature and date must not obscure the name or license number in the seal.(22 TAC § 137.33(f))
- City on seal
- The document must show the engineering firm name and firm registration number under § 137.33(n), but no city or address is required anywhere, and none appears on the seal.(22 TAC § 137.31(b); § 137.33(n))
- The seal must follow the Board-authorized design: "STATE OF TEXAS" around the top of the outer band, "LICENSED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER" around the bottom, a star in the center, with your name and license number beneath it.(22 TAC § 137.31(b))
- Titles must not appear on the seal — the Board names "Dr.", "Col." and "P.E." specifically. You may use "P.E." when signing the work; it does not belong on the seal itself.(22 TAC § 137.31(f))
- The name on the seal must be a given name, a commonly accepted variation of it, or an initial combination, with the surname exactly as currently listed with the Board and as it appears in your usual written signature. Nicknames are not permitted.(22 TAC § 137.31(d))
- Either all-uppercase ("LESLIE H. DOE") or standard mixed case ("Leslie H. Doe") is acceptable. A legal name change after licensure requires a new seal.(22 TAC § 137.31(d))
- Rubber stamps, impression seals and electronic seals are all acceptable under Texas law. Physical seals must be capable of leaving a permanent ink image or impression.(22 TAC § 137.31(c))
- Preprinting blank forms with a seal, or using a decal or other seal replica, is prohibited.(22 TAC § 137.31(e))
- Affix the seal, your signature and the date of execution to all documents containing the final version of any engineering work.(22 TAC § 137.33)

Can I put "P.E." on my Texas engineer's seal?▾
"P.E." does not belong on the seal. The Board lists it alongside "Dr." and "Col." as a title that should not be included, and warns that using a non-compliant seal can subject a license holder to enforcement action. You may still use the designation when signing the work. (22 TAC § 137.31(f))
Is there a minimum size for a Texas PE seal?▾
Two inches is a maximum. The rule states no minimum — legibility of the name and license number is the test a smaller seal has to pass. (22 TAC § 137.31(b))
Can I use a nickname on my Texas PE seal?▾
Nicknames are not permitted in place of a given name or initial combination, and the surname must match what the Board currently has on file and what appears in your usual written signature. (22 TAC § 137.31(d))
Do I need a new Texas PE seal after a legal name change?▾
A legal name change after licensure requires a new seal, not an amended one. (22 TAC § 137.31(d))
