Tennessee PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Tennessee prescribes the engineer's seal by picture. Rule 0120-02-.08(1)(a) reproduces the required design — the registrant's name arcing the top of the outer band, "REGISTERED ENGINEER" on the inner band, the Great Seal of Tennessee in the center, "No." for the license number, and "STATE OF TENNESSEE" along the bottom — and gives no dimension at all. The legend is "REGISTERED ENGINEER", not "Professional Engineer". Land surveyors fall under a different board and a different rule, 0820-04-.08, which fixes their seal at two inches in diameter in all cases.
The 1⅝-to-1⅞-inch range quoted for Tennessee has no source in the rules: the words "inch", "diameter" and "size" appear nowhere in chapters 0120-01 or 0120-02. The two-inch figure belongs to the land surveyor rule. The Secretary of State still publishes the rule-maker as the State Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners (Title 0120), while the board's own page uses the name State Board of Examiners for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors.

- An electronically generated signature and date are placed either across the face and beyond the circumference of the seal or adjacent to it. A digital signature must be unique to the individual, capable of verification, under sole control, and linked so that it is invalidated if any data in the document is changed.(Rule 0120-02-.08(8)(b))
- The registrant stamps all original sheets of any bound or unbound set of working drawings or plans, the original cover or index page identifying all specification pages covered, and the original cover or index page for design calculations or reports submitted for review.(Rule 0120-02-.08(2))

The engineer legend is "REGISTERED ENGINEER". Neither "Professional Engineer" nor "P.E." appears anywhere in the rule. (Rule 0120-02-.08(1)(a))
Where does "STATE OF TENNESSEE" go on a Tennessee engineer's seal?▾
"STATE OF TENNESSEE" belongs on the bottom arc, with the registrant's name across the top. Templates built for other states usually have these reversed. (Rule 0120-02-.08(1)(a))
