Oklahoma PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them

The Oklahoma engineer's seal is two concentric circles. Under OAC 245:15-17-1(c) the inner circle carries the licensee's name and certificate number as they appear on the Certificate of Licensure, and the area between the two circles carries "Licensed Professional Engineer" at the top reading clockwise and "Oklahoma" at the bottom reading counter-clockwise. The rule accepts two commercially designated sizes — the 1-7/8" seal and the 1-5/8" seal — each with its own prescribed inner and outer circle. The word on the engineer's seal is "Oklahoma" alone; "State of Oklahoma" belongs to the architect's seal, which a different board governs.
The board writes its own name as the Oklahoma State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Surveyors; OAC Title 245 and 59 O.S. § 475.3 still read "Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors". A Professional Structural Engineer may hold an additional seal reading "Professional Structural Engineer" for structural projects, and uses the ordinary "Licensed Professional Engineer" seal for other engineering work.

- The signature of the licensee and the date of signature are placed adjacent to or across the seal, and the seal is affixed only while the license is current and in good standing.(59 O.S. § 475.15(C); OAC 245:15-17-2(a))
- A digital signature must be unique to the person using it, capable of verification, and under the sole responsibility and control of the licensee affixing it. A scanned image of an original signature may be used if accompanied by an original handwritten date.(OAC 245:15-17-2(l))
Oklahoma engineer seal questions
What legend does Oklahoma require on a new PE seal?▾
The legend is "Licensed Professional Engineer", not "Professional Engineer" and not "P.E.". Seals already reading "Registered Professional Engineer" may continue in use under the grandfather clause, but a new seal cannot be made that way. (OAC 245:15-17-1(c), (e))
Should an Oklahoma PE seal say "State of Oklahoma"?▾
The rule inscribes "Oklahoma", not "State of Oklahoma". "State of Oklahoma" is the wording the architect rule prescribes. (OAC 245:15-17-1(c))
Is 1¾ inches the whole size spec for an Oklahoma PE seal?▾
The rule fixes both circles, not just an outside diameter. "Approximately 1¾ inches" describes only the outer circle of the 1-7/8" seal and omits the 1-1/8" inner circle that goes with it. (OAC 245:15-17-1(c))
Do you sign across an Oklahoma PE seal or next to it?▾
