Maine PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Maine's engineer seal is 1-3/4 inches in diameter, the format the Board designates Size #1. The legend is fixed by statute at 32 M.R.S. §1355 as "licensed professional engineer", and the Board's approved format adds the licensee's name, the license number and the indication "State of Maine" — with no position prescribed for it and lettering in ALL CAPS so the seal stays clear after image transfer. The diameter comes from the Board's approved format rather than from the rule text, which authorizes "a seal of the size and design prescribed by the Board". Engineers, architects and land surveyors each answer to a different Maine board.
Sources that call Maine's seal size unregulated are reading only 02-322 C.M.R. Ch. 2 §9, which delegates size and design to the Board rather than stating a number. The Board then prescribes 1-3/4 inches on its Approved Seal Format page. No architect entry appears below: 32 M.R.S. §225 leaves the architect's seal design entirely to the architects' board, and that board publishes no seal-design specification, so the "Licensed Architect" seal sold by vendors has no primary source behind it.
