Montana PE seal requirements: proper sizing, signing and sealing of documents
As of
Montana's seal rule is ARM 24.183.511, and it requires three things: the licensee's name, the license number written in the short form #####PE, #####LS or #####ES, and the applicable legend "Professional Engineer," "Professional Land Surveyor," or "Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor." Instead of a diameter range the rule authorizes three commercial designated sizes — a 1 5/8" pocket seal, a 2" desk seal and a 2" rubber stamp seal — and lets a digital seal be reduced to one-half the size of the original. The rule never mentions the state name; the board's own FAQ asks for the bare word "Montana", but "State of Montana" is required nowhere in Montana law for an engineer or surveyor seal.
ARM 24.183.1001, sometimes cited for Montana seals, is "Form of Corner Records — Information to Be Included" and does not concern seals. ARM 24.183.511 was rewritten effective December 24, 2016; pre-2016 text still circulating on third-party republishers refers to a "Licensed Professional Engineer" legend and to facsimiles, and that version is superseded.
