Montana PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Montana's seal rule is ARM 24.183.511, and it requires three things: the licensee's name, the license number written in the short form #####PE, #####LS or #####ES, and the applicable legend "Professional Engineer," "Professional Land Surveyor," or "Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor." Instead of a diameter range the rule authorizes three commercial designated sizes — a 1 5/8" pocket seal, a 2" desk seal and a 2" rubber stamp seal — and lets a digital seal be reduced to one-half the size of the original. The rule never mentions the state name; the board's own FAQ asks for the bare word "Montana", but "State of Montana" is required nowhere in Montana law for an engineer or surveyor seal. Architects are a different board, and their seal must carry the city and state of the architect's place of business.
ARM 24.183.1001, sometimes cited for Montana seals, is "Form of Corner Records — Information to Be Included" and does not concern seals. ARM 24.183.511 was rewritten effective December 24, 2016; pre-2016 text still circulating on third-party republishers refers to a "Licensed Professional Engineer" legend and to facsimiles, and that version is superseded.

- The rule writes the license number digits first with the suffix after, giving #####PE, #####LS and #####ES as its own examples. ES is the dual engineer and surveyor form.(ARM 24.183.511(2))
- A licensee may obtain the seal in the form of an embossing or rubber stamp or digital seal, and may use a digital seal for stamping plans, specifications, survey documents and reports.(ARM 24.183.511(1) and (6))
- The seal, digital seal, and signature must be of sufficient print quality to legibly reproduce on all copies or prints of final original drawings to which they are applied.(ARM 24.183.511(4))
- The title page of all plans and documents filed with public authorities must bear the seal and the original signature of the licensee in responsible charge.(ARM 24.183.511(5))
- The dating obligation sits in statute, not in the seal rule: licensees sign, date, and seal professional or technical documents created in the practice of professional engineering or professional land surveying. The date is not a seal element.(MCA 37-67-314)
