Louisiana PE seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them
As of
Louisiana's seal rule is LAC 46:LXI.2701. Two sizes are acceptable and only two: a 1-5/8 inch seal, commonly used in pocket seals, and a 2 inch seal, commonly used in desk seals. The design must carry "State of Louisiana", the licensee's name, the license number, and either "Professional Engineer" or "Professional Engineer in _______ Engineering" — "P.E." is not an authorized legend. The signature and date must be placed adjacent to or across the seal, and firms are not authorized to possess or use seals.
The 1½-to-2-inch range quoted for Louisiana matches no provision of §2701; the rule gives two discrete sizes, 1-5/8 inch and 2 inch. The endorsement legend at §2701.A.2.a.v was added by the April 2025 amendment, LR 51:553.

- Expiration date

- Signature date

- City on seal
- The rule does not require a city on the seal.(LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.a)
- The design of the seal must have, at minimum: "State of Louisiana", the licensee's name, the license number, and "Professional Engineer" or "Professional Engineer in _______ Engineering".(LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.a)
- Naming the branch of engineering is optional — the rule offers "Professional Engineer" and "Professional Engineer in _______ Engineering" as alternatives.(LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.a.iv)
- A licensee licensed under R.S. 37:51 et seq. and either §903.F or §909.F must also carry "Licensed by Endorsement, R.S. 37:51 et seq." on the seal.(LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.a.v)
- Seals issued before these rules were promulgated may use the word "registered" in lieu of "licensed". A replacement seal must use "licensed".(LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.a)
- Rubber seals and computer-generated seals of the same design and size are acceptable.(LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.d-e)

- Documents requiring a seal may be transmitted electronically provided the seal, signature and date are transmitted in a secure mode that precludes them being reproduced or modified.(LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.5.a)
- Preliminary documents need not be sealed but must be marked in large bold letters "Preliminary—Not For Construction", "—For Permit Purposes Only", "—For Review Only" or "—Not For Recordation, Conveyances or Sales".(LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.4.b)

Can a Louisiana PE seal use "P.E."?▾
"P.E." is not an authorized Louisiana legend. The rule permits "Professional Engineer", "Professional Engineer in _______ Engineering" or "Professional Land Surveyor", and nothing else. (LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.a.iv)
Is 1½ inches an acceptable Louisiana seal size?▾
1½ inches is not a Louisiana size. The rule names two discrete diameters, 1-5/8 inch and 2 inch, not a range between them. (LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.c)
Can a Louisiana PE seal still say "registered"?▾
"Registered" survives only on seals issued before these rules were promulgated. If you replace a seal, the new one must use "licensed" in lieu of "registered". (LAC 46:LXI.2701.A.2.a)
What must a Louisiana licensee admitted by endorsement add to the seal?▾
