Kansas Land Surveyor seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them

Land surveyors in Kansas seal under K.A.R. 66-6-1 (Seals and signatures); K.S.A. 74-7023(d), administered by the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions. The seal reads “PROFESSIONAL SURVEYOR”. Two concentric circles: the outer circle shall be 1⅝ inches in diameter and the inner circle 1 1/16 inches in diameter.
One board licenses all five of the Kansas technical professions — architecture, landscape architecture, professional engineering, professional geology and professional surveying (K.S.A. 74-7003(w)) — so there is no separate architects' board or surveyors' board to consult. Landscape architects and geologists use the same two-circle seal with "LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT" or "PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGIST" in the outer band. Note where the wording comes from: K.A.R. 66-6-1(a) fixes the geometry and the inner-circle wording itself, but describes the outer band only as "the licensee's profession"; the profession words are supplied by the Board's own published guidance rather than by the regulation. K.A.R. 66-6-1 was last amended December 4, 2020, and on August 10, 2026 the Board's proposed-rules page read "There are no currently proposed amended regulations." One presentational discrepancy is worth knowing: the regulation as filed with the Secretary of State prints "LICENSED" and "KANSAS" in capitals, and the Board's PDF handouts print the profession names in capitals too, while the HTML copy of the same material on the Board's seal page renders all of those words in title case. The regulation prescribes the words, not their capitalization.

Does a Kansas land surveyor's seal say "Land Surveyor"?▾
No. Kansas licenses "professional surveyors" under K.S.A. 74-7003(s), and the wording the Board publishes for the bottom of the outer band is "PROFESSIONAL SURVEYOR" — no "Land", and no "P.S." or "R.L.S." abbreviation anywhere. The regulation itself says only that the band carries "the licensee's profession"; the words come from the Board's "Examples of Seals by Profession" and its Seals and Signature FAQ, not from Agency 66. Must a Kansas land surveyor seal a land description as well as a plat?▾
Yes. K.A.R. 66-6-1(d)(1)(D) has an original land description prepared for the purpose of conveying an interest in real property sealed, signed and dated on its first or last page — a written description with no drawing attached still takes the seal, and it takes it in a prescribed place. Which Kansas board licenses land surveyors and writes their seal rule?▾
The Kansas State Board of Technical Professions, which is also the engineers', architects', landscape architects' and geologists' board. K.S.A. 74-7003(w) lists professional surveying among the five technical professions and under K.S.A. 74-7004 the governor appoints one board for all of them, so K.A.R. 66-6-1 is the only seal regulation there is — there is no separate surveyors' board and no surveyor-specific seal provision, only the profession word that changes in the outer band.
