Alabama Landscape Architect seal requirements: proper sizing, signing and sealing of documents

As of

Alabama licenses landscape architects through the Alabama State Board of Examiners of Landscape Architects, and the seal design lives in a board rule rather than the statute. Rule 500-X-2-.07(3)(a) fixes the wording — "STATE OF ALABAMA" at the top of a 1/4-inch outer ring and "REGISTERED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT" at the bottom, with the registrant's name above a horizontal line and the registration number below it — and fixes the outside diameter at 2 inches. Ala. Code § 34-17-4(a) requires that all final drawings, specifications, plans, reports and other documents issued or filed for public record be dated and bear the landscape architect's signature and seal.

Chapter 330-X-11 is still published under the Board's former name, Alabama State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Seals obtained before the rule was adopted that conform to prior Board rules remain acceptable. The seal provisions sit inside a rule titled "Granting Of License To Practice Landscape Architecture" (500-X-2-.07), not in a rule named for seals; subsections (3)(a) and (3)(b) are the only seal design provisions in the board's administrative code.

Alabama landscape architect seal questions

Is your seal actually 2 inches across?

Alabama prescribes a 2-inch outside diameter, along with a 1/16-inch outer border, a second 1/16-inch inner border, and a 1/4-inch outer ring carrying the wording. A 1.5-inch or 1.75-inch stamp of the kind sold for neighbouring states does not meet the rule. (Ala. Admin. Code r. 500-X-2-.07(3)(a))

Are you reading the board's seal or the licensee's seal?

Ala. Code § 34-17-3(e) permits the board to adopt a seal "for use in transacting its official business." That is the agency's own seal and imposes nothing on a landscape architect's stamp. (Ala. Code § 34-17-3(e))
