Oregon Landscape Architect seal requirements: proper sizing, signing and sealing of documents

As of

Oregon registers landscape architects under its own board, and the stamp is prescribed by Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000 under ORS 671.379. The stamp is circular and approximately 1 5/8 inches in diameter, with REGISTERED across the top and LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT around the bottom, the registration number above a signature space that runs through the centre, and the registrant's name, the word OREGON and the date of initial registration below it. ORS 671.379(2) requires the registrant to stamp and sign all final drafts of professional documents issued for permits, agency approvals or contractual obligations, and the rule requires the current registration expiration date to be noted near the signature or directly underneath the stamp.

OAR 820-025-0005 was renumbered from OAR 820-010-0620 by BEELS 7-2015; the old number is still widely cited and no longer exists. The "at least 2 inches from point to point" wording came in with BEELS 3-2024, effective September 11, 2024, and replaced an older sentence that allowed a 1/4" tolerance against Exhibit 1. The board's Exhibit 1 handout on its website is dated April 26, 2017 and still reprints that superseded tolerance language. Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000 was last amended by LAB 1-2019, effective May 15, 2019, under statutory authority ORS 671.379, 671.415 and 671.310(1). Oregon's landscape architects are regulated by their own board, not by the State Board of Architect Examiners or the engineering board, whose stamp rules (OAR chapters 806 and 820) do not apply to them.

Oregon Landscape Architect seal

Legend
“REGISTERED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT”
Diameter
Approximately 1 5/8 inches in diameter, per the board's prescribed design.
Expiration date
Required, but written with the document rather than engraved into the stamp: the registrant notes the current registration expiration date either near the signature or directly underneath the stamp when stamping and signing final drafts. The date engraved inside the stamp is the date of initial registration.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(4), (5))
Signature date
Nothing in ORS 671.379 or Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000 calls for the date on which the document was signed. The two dates the rules do name are the date of initial registration, which sits inside the stamp, and the current registration expiration date, which is noted near the signature or under the stamp.(ORS 671.379(1); Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(4), (5))
City on seal
The stamp's contents are listed in Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(2) and (4) — legend, registration number, signature space, name, OREGON and initial registration date — and no address or city is among them.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(2), (4))

  • Every Registered Landscape Architect must obtain a stamp of the design approved by the Board. The stamp may be a crimp or rubber style hand stamp or a computer-generated (digital) stamp.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(1))
  • The stamp shall be circular, approximately 1 5/8 inches in diameter, with the word REGISTERED over the top with a large dot at both ends of the word, and the words LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT around the bottom.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(2))
  • The stamp must have space for the registrant's signature to be written through the centre of the stamp.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(3))

  • When stamping and signing final drafts of professional documents, the Registered Landscape Architect shall note the current registration expiration date either near the signature or directly underneath the stamp.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(5))
  • Use of the stamp without signature by a Registered Landscape Architect is acceptable on preliminary documents.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(6))
  • The rule exempts from stamping documents that are not landscape architectural work, unmodified manufacturers' materials, and informational items such as journal articles, presentations and brochures.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(7))
  • The Registered Landscape Architect is responsible for custody of the stamp; improper use of the stamp, whether authorized or not by the Registered Landscape Architect, shall be grounds for disciplinary action or civil penalty by the Board.(Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(8))

Oregon landscape architect seal questions

Is the date inside an Oregon stamp the date the drawing was signed?

No. The date engraved below the registrant's name and the word OREGON is the date of initial registration; the date that changes is the current registration expiration date, and that one is noted near the signature or directly underneath the stamp rather than cut into the stamp. (Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(4), (5))

Does the signature go beside the Oregon stamp?

No — the design has to leave room for the signature to be written through the centre of the stamp, between the registration number and the registrant's name. (Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(3), (4))

Does a preliminary drawing have to be signed?

No. Subsection (6) accepts use of the stamp without a signature on preliminary documents; the signature requirement in ORS 671.379(2) attaches to final drafts issued for permits, agency approvals or contractual obligations. (Or. Admin. R. 804-030-0000(6); ORS 671.379(2))
