Massachusetts Landscape Architect seal requirements: proper sizing, signing and sealing of documents
As of
Massachusetts fixes the landscape architect's seal by picture rather than by measurement. M.G.L. c. 112, § 100 requires every registered landscape architect to have “a seal of a design authorized by the board”, and 242 CMR 3.04(1) requires the design, arrangement, size and wording to conform exactly with a figure printed in the regulation: an outer band reading MASSACHUSETTS across the top and REGISTERED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT across the bottom, an inner circle carrying the registrant's name and NO. plus the registration number, and the outline of the Commonwealth at the centre. No diameter is stated anywhere in § 100 or in 242 CMR 3.00, and the figure itself is printed without caption, scale or dimension.

250 CMR 3.00 is the registration process and M.G.L. c. 112, § 81D is the definitions section for §§ 81D through 81T. Neither contains a seal provision, though both are commonly cited as the Massachusetts seal rule. 242 CMR 3.00 carries the page footer “(MA REG. # 1329, Dated 12-30-16)” and closes “REGULATORY AUTHORITY 242 CMR 3.00: M.G.L. c. 112, § 102.”; mass.gov gives the regulation's date as 12/30/2016 and publishes it as a PDF download only. 242 CMR 3.00 is the only chapter in 242 CMR. Landscape architects are governed by M.G.L. c. 112, §§ 98 through 107, of which § 100 is the section headed “Landscape architects; seal of design”. The seal design appears nowhere in words: it exists only as an image embedded on page 2 of the official regulation, so a text-only rendering of 242 CMR 3.04 shows no design at all.

Massachusetts Landscape Architect seal
- Seal requirements
- M.G.L. c. 112, § 100; 242 CMR 3.04
- Legend
- “MASSACHUSETTS ... REGISTERED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT”
- Diameter
- No diameter is prescribed in words. 242 CMR 3.04(1) requires that “the design, arrangement, size and wording” conform exactly with the figure reproduced in the regulation, but the regulation states no measurement and the figure carries no caption, scale or dimension; M.G.L. c. 112, § 100 gives none either. The whole of 242 CMR 3.00 was read and is silent on seal size.
- Expiration date
- The figure that 242 CMR 3.04(1) requires the seal to match exactly carries only the registrant's name and registration number inside the rings; no expiration or renewal date appears in the figure, elsewhere in 242 CMR 3.00, or in § 100.(242 CMR 3.04(1); M.G.L. c. 112, § 100)
- Signature date
- 242 CMR 3.04(3) requires that all stamped or embossed plans, specifications, reports and other documents also be signed and dated by the Landscape Architect.(242 CMR 3.04(3))
- City on seal
- Neither § 100 nor any part of 242 CMR 3.00, including the prescribed figure, calls for a city, address or place of business.(M.G.L. c. 112, § 100; 242 CMR 3.00)
- “Every registered landscape architect shall have a seal of a design authorized by the board. All plans and specifications and reports prepared by a registered landscape architect, or under his supervision, shall be stamped with the impression of such seal. A registered landscape architect shall impress his seal on any plans, specifications or reports only if his certificate of registration is in full force and if he was the author of such plans, specifications and reports or in responsible supervision of their preparation.”(M.G.L. c. 112, § 100)
- “For the purpose of certifying plans, specifications, reports, and other documents, the seal referred to in M.G.L. c. 112, § 100 may be either a metal embossing device, a rubber stamp or an electronically generated image, but the design, arrangement, size and wording of which shall conform exactly with the figure below except for insertion of the registrant's own name and registration number.”(242 CMR 3.04(1))
- The figure printed in 242 CMR 3.04(1) is a circular seal whose outer edge is a narrow band of fine radial ticks (a rope- or reed-like border). The outer ring reads MASSACHUSETTS across the top and REGISTERED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT across the bottom; inside a heavy inner circle the registrant's name runs across the top (shown as “YOUR NAME HERE”) and the registration number across the bottom (shown as “NO. 000”), with the outline of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the centre. The figure carries no caption, scale or dimension.(242 CMR 3.04(1), figure (page 2 of the official regulation))
- “Every registered Landscape Architect shall stamp or emboss the seal upon two sheets of letterhead and send the impression to the Board as evidence that they have complied with the requirement of acquiring a seal that conforms to the design authorized by the Board. Nonconforming seals will be rejected by the Board.”(242 CMR 3.04(2))
- “All stamped or embossed plans, specifications, reports, and other documents shall also be signed and dated by the Landscape Architect.”(242 CMR 3.04(3))
Massachusetts landscape architect seal questions
Should the seal read “licensed” or “registered”?▾
Registered. The prescribed figure reads REGISTERED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, and § 100 speaks of the “registered landscape architect” and his “certificate of registration”. The regulations do use the other word about the credential itself — 242 CMR 3.06(2) says “A license will be granted by the Board” — but the wording on the seal is fixed by the figure, and a seal reading “licensed” would not conform exactly to it. (242 CMR 3.04(1); 242 CMR 3.06(2); M.G.L. c. 112, § 100)
Do you have to file your seal with the Board?▾
Yes. 242 CMR 3.04(2) requires every registered Landscape Architect to stamp or emboss the seal upon two sheets of letterhead and send the impression to the Board as evidence of having acquired a seal that conforms to the design authorized by the Board, and states that nonconforming seals will be rejected by the Board. (242 CMR 3.04(2))
Is an electronic seal allowed?▾
Yes, expressly. 242 CMR 3.04(1) permits the seal to be “either a metal embossing device, a rubber stamp or an electronically generated image”, provided the image conforms exactly to the prescribed figure. (242 CMR 3.04(1))
