Utah Geologist seal requirements: proper sizing, signing and sealing of documents
As of
Utah Code § 58-76-601 requires every professional geologist to have a seal and delegates its design to rule, and Utah Admin. Code R156-76-601 supplies it: a circular seal, 1-1/2 inches minimum diameter, carrying the licensee's name, license number, "State of Utah" and "Licensed Professional Geologist". The signature and date must appear across the face of each seal imprint, and the original seal imprint, original signature and date go on the cover or title sheet of each original set of final geologic map, cross-section, sketch, drawing, plan or report.

R156-22-601 states a minimum diameter and nothing else; the "maximum 2 inches" figure circulated for Utah is in no part of the rule. The agency is now the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL); the older name Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing survives only in the legacy heading of the R156 code title. Licences are issued by the Utah Division of Professional Licensing; the Professional Geologist Licensing Board created by Utah Code § 58-76-201 advises the division rather than issuing licences itself. R156-76-601 was last changed April 8, 2021 (notice of continuation January 25, 2022), while Utah Code § 58-76-603, the authorised-use provision, was amended by Chapter 64 of the 2026 General Session; the seal design in R156-76-601 is unaffected by that amendment.

Utah geologist seal questions
Does the signature cross the seal?▾
R156-76-601(1)(c) requires both the signature and the date to appear across the face of each seal imprint, not alongside it. (Utah Admin. Code R156-76-601(1)(c))
Is 1-1/2 inches a target or a floor?▾
R156-76-601(1)(a) states 1-1/2 inches as a minimum diameter, so a larger circular seal complies; no maximum is given. (Utah Admin. Code R156-76-601(1)(a))
Are you sealing work you did not prepare?▾
Utah Code § 58-76-603 permits affixing the seal to another person's work only where the licensee performs a thorough review for compliance with all applicable laws, rules and professional standards and makes any necessary corrections before the final document goes to a public authority or client. (Utah Code Ann. § 58-76-603(3)-(5))
