California Geologist seal requirements: proper sizing, signing and sealing of documents

As of

California's geologist seal is set by Business and Professions Code § 7852 and 16 CCR § 3008: not less than 1 1/2 inches in diameter, reading "Professional Geologist" in the top border and "State of California" in the bottom border, with the licensee's name as it appears on the certificate and the license number in the center. The seal may leave a permanent ink representation, a permanent impression, or an electronically-generated representation, and the signature may be applied electronically. The date of signing and sealing must appear immediately below or next to the signature and seal.

Section 3008(b) prescribes a separate seal for certified specialty geologists, reading either "Certified Engineering Geologist" or "Certified Hydrogeologist" and carrying the certification number rather than the license number; a certified specialist therefore has seal wording distinct from the plain professional geologist seal in 3008(a). Section 3008(c) prescribes a parallel "Professional Geophysicist" seal under Business and Professions Code § 7852.1.

California geologist seal questions

Are you using a rubber stamp of your signature, or preprinted sealed forms?

Section 3008(g) prohibits preprinting blank forms with the seal or signature, decals of either, and rubber stamps of the signature - even though the seal itself may be a stamp, impression or electronic representation. (16 CCR § 3008(g))

Are you sealing a Real Estate Transfer Disclosure Statement?

Section 3008(d) forbids using the seal on the Civil Code § 1102.6 disclosure statement itself, while requiring it on a geologic report or opinion attached separately as a substituted disclosure. (16 CCR § 3008(d))

Does the name on your seal match your certificate?

The center of the seal must carry the licensee's name as it appears on the certificate issued by the Board; only the given name may be abbreviated or reduced to initials, and the surname on file must appear on both the seal and the signature. (16 CCR § 3008(a)(3)(A), (e))
