Idaho Geologist seal requirements: proper sizing, signing and sealing of documents
As of
Idaho registers professional geologists under Idaho Code title 54, chapter 28, and § 54-2815 entitles each registrant to "a seal of the design authorized by the board, bearing the registrant's name and the legend 'registered professional geologist.'" The board's authorised design is Appendix A to IDAPA 24.04.01: "REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGIST" around the top, "STATE OF IDAHO" around the bottom, the name and registration number inside, with the outer ring fixed at 1 1/2 inches and the inner ring at 1 inch. IDAPA 24.04.01.200.02 allows a rubber stamp, crimp or electronically generated image, requires the signature and date alongside the seal, and states that "No further words or wording are required."

Idaho publishes no seal artwork for any of the three professions. The contact block on the cover of that chapter prints the board's website as https://dopl.idaho.gov/pht/, which is the Physical Therapy Board; the working address is https://dopl.idaho.gov/ipels/, and the older ipels.idaho.gov host no longer resolves at all. The board still uses the registration title "registered professional geologist" rather than "licensed". It now sits inside the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, and IDAPA 24.04.01 was rewritten in the state's zero-based rule review — the current seal provisions carry a 7-1-25 effective date.

- Appendix A, headed "SEAL OF REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGIST", prints the authorised design: "REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGIST" around the upper outer ring, "STATE OF IDAHO" around the lower outer ring with a star at each side, and "NAME" and "NO." within the inner ring.(IDAPA 24.04.01, Appendix A)
Idaho geologist seal questions
Signature or seal? Idaho's statute says either, but the rule requires both plus the date.▾
The statute is written in the alternative — geologic documents "shall be signed by the geologist or be impressed with an authorized seal" — but the board's rule is cumulative: seal, signature and date must all appear on final and original documents. (Idaho Code § 54-2815; IDAPA 24.04.01.200.02.a, .02.b)
Is the document final, or does it have to be marked Preliminary, Draft or Not for Construction?▾
Anything issued without seal, signature and date has to be labelled: "A document that is not final and does not contain a seal, signature, and date will be marked as 'Preliminary,' 'Draft,' or 'Not for Construction.'" (IDAPA 24.04.01.200.02.a)
Is your handwritten signature adjacent to or across the seal?▾
Placement is prescribed for wet signatures only: if the signature is handwritten it must be adjacent to or across the seal. (IDAPA 24.04.01.200.02)
Are you sealing a drawing set, where each sheet must be sealed, or a report, where the title page suffices?▾
Sheet-by-sheet sealing differs from reports: every plan or drawing sheet is sealed and signed by the registrant responsible for it, while only the title page of a report or specification needs to bear the seal. (IDAPA 24.04.01.200.02.b)
