Idaho Architect seal requirements: size, wording, and the rule that sets them

Architects in Idaho seal under Idaho Code § 54-304 (Architect's seal), administered by the Board of Architects and Landscape Architects. The seal reads “licensed architect, state of Idaho”. No diameter is prescribed. Idaho Code § 54-304 states no dimension, and IDAPA 24.01.01, the rule chapter to which the statute delegates the design, contains no seal rule at all.
Idaho publishes no seal artwork for any of the three professions. Idaho Code § 54-1215(3)(e) hands the engineer and surveyor design to the board, and the board's only published statement about the wording is a June 2008 news bulletin announcing that the specification would move from "Registered" to "Licensed" on July 1, 2008; asked about the seal, the board's FAQ points licensees back to the letter the board sent when their license was issued. The 7-1-25 recodification of IDAPA 24.32.01 moved the seal rule from Section 012 to Section 200.01 and dropped the subsection headed "Standard Seals for Engineers and Land Surveyors" — and the board's FAQ still cites IDAPA 24.32.01.101.03, "Use of Seal on Documents," which the recodified chapter no longer contains. The contact block on the cover of that chapter prints the board's website as https://dopl.idaho.gov/pht/, which is the Physical Therapy Board; the working address is https://dopl.idaho.gov/ipels/, and the older ipels.idaho.gov host no longer resolves at all. Two articles in the board's own Ethics and Professional Practice Guidance Document, both carrying the same 07/10/2025 revision date, disagree about facsimile signatures: "Digital Signatures" lists "a facsimile image of the licensee's signature adjacent to or over an electronically generated stamp" as an allowable form since Senate Bill 1235, while "Stamping Practices" still says "you cannot use computer generated signatures and dates" and requires the licensee to personally sign and date each original. The statute itself no longer defines "signature" at all. For architects, Idaho Code § 54-304(2) provides that the design and use of the seal "shall be as required by board rule," but IDAPA 24.01.01 contains no seal rule, and the rulemaking pending before that board in 2026 adds one for certified interior designers only.

Which Idaho board sets the architect's seal, and does it fix the wording?▾
The Board of Architects and Landscape Architects, not the Board of Licensure of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors — and Idaho reverses the usual pattern here. The engineer and land surveyor seal design is delegated to their board by Idaho Code § 54-1215(3)(e) and no specification has ever been published, while the architect's wording is fixed in the statute itself by Idaho Code § 54-304(1). The architect is the only one of the three professions whose seal contents an Idaho licensee can read for themselves in the code. (Idaho Code § 54-304(1); § 54-1215(3)(e))
What size should an Idaho architect's seal be?▾
Idaho never says. Idaho Code § 54-304 states no dimension, and § 54-304(2) closes with "The design and use of the seal shall be as required by board rule" — but the Board of Architects and Landscape Architects has adopted no seal rule to receive that delegation. IDAPA 24.01.01 runs to Sections 000, 001, 100, 200 and 400 — legal authority, scope, licensure, practice standards and fees — and the word "seal" appears nowhere in the chapter. Does an Idaho architect's seal say "Registered Architect"?▾
No. Idaho Code § 54-304(1) requires the impression to contain the name and Idaho architect license number of the architect and the words "licensed architect" and "state of Idaho". The two phrases are quoted separately and joined by "and", so both are required and a seal carrying only "licensed architect" is short of the statute. The enacted text prints both phrases in lower case, and the number named is the Idaho architect license number, not a number issued anywhere else. (Idaho Code § 54-304(1))
What records must an Idaho architect keep after sealing another's work?▾
Five years' worth, available to the board on request. Idaho Code § 54-304(4) allows an architect to seal submissions prepared by another architect licensed in Idaho whose work has been reviewed and either coordinated or integrated, and prototypical building documents prepared by an architect licensed in any state who holds the NCARB certificate, where the work has been reviewed and integrated. Section 54-304(6) then requires adequate and complete records showing the nature and extent of the architect's control over work prepared by persons not regularly employed in the resident office, or of the review and integration of another architect's work and that it met the required standard of care, to be maintained for at least five years following the signing and sealing.
