The Wisconsin rules in full, with citations

The seal rule did not move in the 2024–2025 rewrite of the A-E chapters; it is still Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02, and it is the only seal rule in the series — chs. A-E 3, A-E 4 and A-E 6, the registration chapters for architects, professional engineers and professional land surveyors, contain no seal provisions at all. What changed is its substance: CR 24-001 (Register July 2024 No. 823, effective 1 August 2024) added registered interior designers to the board, to its legal name and to the approved seal designs, and CR 24-028 (Register May 2025 No. 833, effective 1 June 2025) repealed and recreated § A-E 2.02(3), repealed § A-E 2.02(7)(a) outright and rewrote § A-E 2.02(7)(b). Separately, § A-E 2.02(8) lets plans prepared by an architect or professional engineer credentialed in another state be filed here only if a Wisconsin credential holder attaches a certificate — itself dated, signed and sealed — describing the review performed and accepting responsibility for supervision of construction; that route does not extend to land surveying. The section as published in Register June 2026 No. 846 still carries the 1⅝-to-2-inch diameter and the 1987 specimen artwork, and the only later change to ch. A-E 2 is CR 25-082, which created § A-E 2.03(5) on certificates of authorization effective 1 July 2026 and left § A-E 2.02 untouched.

  • Each professional land surveyor shall obtain a seal that complies with board specifications for registration seals, and each seal shall include the credential holder's name, credential number and city. (Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02(1))
  • The approved design arcs "WISCONSIN" across the top of the outer band and "LAND SURVEYOR" across the bottom, with a five-pointed star at each side, and sets the name, credential number, city and state on separate lines inside the inner circle. (Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02(2))

  • A property survey map must bear the seal, name, address and signature of the professional land surveyor under whose direction and control the survey was made, together with a statement certifying that the survey complies with ch. A-E 7 and is correct to the best of the surveyor's knowledge and belief. The address goes on the map, not on the seal. (Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 7.05(8))
  • A U.S. public land survey monument record must include the seal and signature of the professional land surveyor under whose direction and control the corner location was determined, together with a statement certifying that the record is correct and complete to the best of the surveyor's knowledge and belief. (Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 7.08(3)(i))
  • An addendum to a U.S. public land survey monument record must include the seal and signature of the professional land surveyor under whose direction and control the corner location was determined or the witness monument established; the certifying statement required of the original record is not repeated on the addendum. (Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 7.08(4)(c))
  • No professional land surveyor may seal and sign any maps, plats, charts or reports for professional land surveying practice that were not prepared by the professional land surveyor or under his or her personal direction and control. (Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 8.10(2))

Does a Wisconsin land surveyor seal say "Professional Land Surveyor"?

No. The approved design in Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02(2) arcs "WISCONSIN" across the top of the outer band and "LAND SURVEYOR" across the bottom, with a five-pointed star at each side and the name, credential number, city and state inside the inner circle. The word "professional" is nowhere on it, even though the credential is a professional land surveyor license, the board acts through a professional land surveyor section, and chs. A-E 6 and A-E 7 use the longer title throughout. Sub. (1) requires a seal that complies with board specifications, and the designs approved in sub. Does a Wisconsin property survey map need the surveyor's address?

Yes, and it is a separate item from the city that goes on the seal. Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 7.05(8) requires the map to bear the seal, name, address and signature of the professional land surveyor under whose direction and control the property survey was made, together with a statement certifying that the survey complies with ch. A-E 7 and is correct to the best of the surveyor's knowledge and belief. The seal itself carries only the credential holder's name, credential number and city under § A-E 2.02(1); the address belongs on the face of the map, not inside the circle. (Wis. Admin. What does a Wisconsin monument record need besides the surveyor's seal?

A certifying statement — on the record, but not on the addendum. Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 7.08(3)(i) requires a U.S. public land survey monument record to include the seal and signature of the professional land surveyor under whose direction and control the corner location was determined together with a statement certifying that the record is correct and complete to the best of the surveyor's knowledge and belief. The addendum provision, § A-E 7.08(4)(c), asks only for the seal and signature of the surveyor under whose direction and control the corner location was determined or the witness monument established, and does not repeat the certifying statement. Can a Wisconsin land surveyor file a map sealed in another state?

Wisconsin's review-and-certify route does not extend to land surveying. Wis. Admin. Code § A-E 2.02(8) lets documents prepared by an out-of-state credential holder be filed as public documents on the strength of a certificate attached by the Wisconsin licensee, but the provision names only architects, professional engineers and registered interior designers — in its introduction and in both paragraph (a) and paragraph (b). Professional land surveyors appear nowhere in it, and § A-E 2.02 supplies no equivalent for a map, plat or chart. Separately, § A-E 8.10(2) forbids a professional land surveyor to seal and sign maps, plats, charts or reports not prepared by the surveyor or under his or her personal direction and control. (Wis.
