No more than 1.5 inches in diameter. That is a ceiling with no matching floor — the inverse of the usual arrangement — so nothing in the rule stops a surveyor going smaller on the diameter itself. What constrains the small end instead is the lettering: all lettering on the seal must be a minimum of 1/10th inch high, so a seal shrunk to fit a crowded plat title block fails on lettering height rather than on diameter. No. The seal shall contain the words "State of Vermont, Licensed Land Surveyor" — one phrase, with the state name inside it — together with the licensee's name and license number. "Professional Land Surveyor" and "Registered Land Surveyor" are other states' wording. The seal must also be of a type recommended and approved by the Board, which publishes an example of an acceptable seal on its web site. (Rule 6.1(b))
No. The statute requires the surveyor to affix the signature and seal together with a certification statement as to the nature of the survey work, on all completed maps, plats, surveys or other documents, before delivery to any client and before anything is offered for filing at the town clerk's office. The statement must set out what information was used as the basis of the survey and indicate that the survey work identified is consistent with that information — an element that sits beside the seal, not on it. Yes. A land surveyor may continue to use a seal which was approved under prior rules of the Board — an express grandfather clause, so an older Vermont seal is not made non-compliant by the current wording. A surveyor ordering a new stamp follows Rule 6.1(b) as it now stands. (Rule 6.1(c))
