The Kansas rules in full, with citations

One board licenses all five of the Kansas technical professions — architecture, landscape architecture, professional engineering, professional geology and professional surveying (K.S.A. 74-7003(w)) — so there is no separate architects' board or surveyors' board to consult. Landscape architects and geologists use the same two-circle seal with "LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT" or "PROFESSIONAL GEOLOGIST" in the outer band. Note where the wording comes from: K.A.R. 66-6-1(a) fixes the geometry and the inner-circle wording itself, but describes the outer band only as "the licensee's profession"; the profession words are supplied by the Board's own published guidance rather than by the regulation. K.A.R. 66-6-1 was last amended December 4, 2020, and on August 10, 2026 the Board's proposed-rules page read "There are no currently proposed amended regulations." One presentational discrepancy is worth knowing: the regulation as filed with the Secretary of State prints "LICENSED" and "KANSAS" in capitals, and the Board's PDF handouts print the profession names in capitals too, while the HTML copy of the same material on the Board's seal page renders all of those words in title case. The regulation prescribes the words, not their capitalization.

  • Each licensee shall obtain a seal of the design approved by the board within 30 days of a license being issued. The seal may be a rubber stamp, an embossed seal, or a digital seal. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(a))
  • The inner circle shall contain the words "LICENSED" at the top of the circle and "KANSAS" at the bottom of the circle and the number of the license certificate in the center. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(a))
  • The area between the two circles shall contain the licensee's name as it appears on that individual's license at the top and the licensee's profession at the bottom. The regulation does not spell the profession out; the Board's "Examples of Seals by Profession" supplies the words, and for an engineer they are "PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER".   • The licensee shall seal, sign, and date only work within the licensee's area of licensure and competence, and shall not review or check another professional's technical submissions and seal them as the licensee's own work unless the licensee is in responsible charge. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(c)(1))
  • The seal may contain, before the licensee's surname, an abbreviated form of the licensee's given name or a combination of initials representing the licensee's given name. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(a))
  • After the seal has been applied to a document, the licensee shall apply the licensee's handwritten or authenticated digital signature and the date across the seal. Seal, signature and date together certify that the document was created by the licensee or under the licensee's responsible charge. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(b)(1))
  • A digital signature may be used if the authentication process is unique to the licensee, is able to be verified, is under the sole control of the licensee, and is linked to the electronic document so that the signature is invalidated if any data in the document is altered. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(b)(3))
  • A set of drawings is sealed on each drawing sheet, or on the first sheet alone where a digital signature process links every sheet to the licensee's area of responsibility, or through a certification block on the cover sheet or first drawing sheet designating the sheets each licensee is responsible for. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(d)(1)(A))
  • Documents signed by the licensee in the licensee's professional capacity shall be stamped with the seal during the duration of the license, and it is unlawful for anyone to stamp any document with the seal after the license has expired or has been revoked unless the license has been renewed or reissued. No person shall tamper with or revise the seal without express written approval by the board. (K.S.A. 74-7023(d))

Is the 1⅝-inch Kansas seal size a minimum or an exact dimension?

The outer circle is fixed at 1⅝ inches. It is a prescribed dimension, not a floor, and there is no 1⅞ inch maximum for it to range up to. The inner circle's 1 1/16 inches is prescribed just as firmly, so a single-ring seal does not conform however well drawn it is. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(a))

Where does the license certificate number go on a Kansas seal?

The number of the license certificate belongs in the center of the inner circle, not in the outer band alongside the licensee's name. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(a))

Can a Kansas PE seal say "P.E." or "State of Kansas"?

"P.E." is not an authorized legend and the phrase "State of Kansas" appears nowhere on the seal. The profession is spelled out in the outer band and the state name is the single word "KANSAS" at the bottom of the inner circle. (K.A.R. 66-6-1(a); KSBTP, Examples of Seals by Profession)

Does the outer band of a Kansas PE seal read "LICENSED PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER"?

No. "LICENSED" is a separate word at the top of the inner circle, so the band between the two circles carries only the licensee's name as it appears on the license at the top and the profession — "PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER" — at the bottom. The Board splits the wording the same way for every profession it licenses: an architect's band reads "ARCHITECT" on its own and a surveyor's reads "PROFESSIONAL SURVEYOR", not "Professional Land Surveyor". Do the signature and date go across or beside a Kansas seal?
