The seal must carry “COLORADO LICENSED PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR”, and the outer circle is nominally 1-5/8 inches (41 mm) in diameter and the inner circle nominally 15/16 inches (24 mm) — the same geometry as the engineer's seal.

Board Rule 1.6(B)(1) tells the surveyor presented with a certification to sign or seal that they should carefully evaluate it, and then makes the consequence mandatory: where it reaches matters beyond their competence, training or education, matters beyond the services actually provided, or matters not prepared under their responsible charge, the surveyor shall either modify the certification to limit its scope or decline to sign it. Board Rule 1.6(A)(5) requires a written statement or certification that defines the surveying services performed under the licensee's responsible charge, and adds that all aspects of the surveyor's work shown on that document must be sealed, signed and dated by the licensee in responsible charge. The engineer's equivalent, Rule 1.5(A)(5), works by limiting the seal to disciplines such as civil or structural; the surveyor's rule has no discipline list to limit. Board Rule 1.6(A)(4) requires the status of surveying documents that are not final to be identified as preliminary when the licensee seals them, and allows further qualifying descriptors such as "for review". The violation is sealing a draft that carries no such marking, not sealing a draft at all. (Board Rule 1.6(A)(4), 4 CCR 730-1)
The older design, which stays acceptable, and two provisions say so on slightly different terms. C.R.S. § 12-120-316(1) lets Colorado land surveyors licensed before July 1, 2004 continue to use their prior existing seals, while Board Rule 1.6(A)(1) deems any seal obtained before July 1, 2005 acceptable. The statute looks at when the licensee was licensed and the rule at when the seal was obtained; a seal produced now follows the design the rule prescribes.
